At their January board meeting the Tall Cedar Foundation™ an international charitable foundation, approved a donation of $20,000 to Michael’s Cause©, a New York based 501©(3)nonprofit dedicated to funding medical and scientific research to help find better treatments and a future cure for this disease.
Michael’s Cause© also helps boys and men in need with assistance towards medical equipment to help improve their quality of life and was founded by Robert and Theresa Capolongo and named after their son who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2010.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the leading fatal genetic disorder worldwide. This condition affects about 1 in every 3,500 boys and causes significant muscle weakness with the first symptoms often appearing by age 5. By age 12, most affected boys need a wheelchair and may have heart and lung issues that can lead to death by their mid to late 20s.
DMD is caused by the bodies’ inability to make a protein called dystrophin, which is an essential ingredient in muscle cells that acts as a shock absorber. Without this protein the muscle cells become weak and eventually resulting in fibrosis. Despite recent advances in science and medicine over the past 15 years, resulting in Boys and men are living longer healthier lives, there is still no cure for DMD.
The Tall Cedar Foundation™ is a 501 ©(3) charitable organization founded in 1951 and affiliated with the fraternal organization Tall Cedars of Lebanon International, an appendant Masonic organization (membership in the Masonic Fraternity is a prerequisite for membership), with over 7,000 members throughout the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, and England.
The Tall Cedar Foundation™ supports children with muscular dystrophy, and they have raised over $19,000,000 to fund research for a cure. They also helped to found a national research organization and launch their largest fundraiser, an annual telethon.
In 2023, the Tall Cedar Foundation™ expanded their mission to provide direct relief to children in our communities by launching the Muscular Dystrophy Relief Fund™ with the purpose of promoting the promote the physical, emotional, and social well-being of children diagnosed with muscular dystrophy by providing grants to cover medical, therapeutic, adaptive equipment, camperships, and other muscular dystrophy related costs.
Other recent donations support of research of a cure include a $20,000 donation to the Strongest Hearts Foundation which funds research using CRISPR technology for treatments and a cure for muscular dystrophy, and $1,000 to Shriner’s Children’s Philadelphia which provides treatment for children with orthopedic conditions and supports research efforts as well.
